Bullying No Way: Understanding Bullying and Supporting Young People
At Clearview Christian College, we are committed to providing a safe, respectful and supportive learning environment where every student is known, valued and protected.
What is bullying?
Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can happen face-to-face or online and may be obvious or hidden. A key feature of bullying is that it involves a power imbalance and repeated behaviour, or behaviour that has the potential to be repeated over time.
Bullying can take many forms, including:
- Physical bullying
- Verbal bullying
- Social (relational) bullying
- Covert (hidden) bullying
- Cyberbullying
- Image-based bullying
It is important to remember that while conflict, disagreements or one-off incidents of unkind behaviour should always be addressed, they are not necessarily bullying. Bullying involves deliberate, repeated harm where the targeted person feels unable to stop it.
Working together
Preventing bullying is a shared responsibility between students, families and schools. We encourage students to:
- Treat others with kindness and respect.
- Speak up if they see bullying occurring.
- Report concerns to a trusted adult.
- Support classmates who may be experiencing bullying.
Parents and carers also play an important role by talking regularly with their children, encouraging respectful relationships and contacting the College if they have concerns.
